The YMCA of Southern Interior BC is hosting a free seniors health assessment at no cost to participants this November. With a charitable mission to build a healthier community for all, YMCA staff are devoted to ensuring older adults have access to resources and programs that will help them maintain their independence and health long-term.

“We want to make it easier for seniors to be active and social,” explains YMCA Health Promotions Manager, Adriane Long. “These health assessments give seniors a starting point to base their exercise routines, introduce them to our supportive YMCA community, and provide information on programs and services that can help them reach their goals.”

What: Free Senior Health Assessment

When: Wednesday, November 23, 2022 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Were: The YMCA’s Kelowna Family Y location on 375 Hartman Road, Kelowna BC

Cost: No cost — Free to community members

Fran Millar participated in one of the Y’s senior health assessments after a hip injury last year and has since made the Y a part of her regular routine to help with her recovery.

“I did the assessment and am now enjoying coming to the Y more regularly,” explains Fran Millar. “I’m getting quite a lot of value out of the pool,” says Millar, “It works the knees, hips, and core.”

Millar is no stranger to the Y, having joined the Y in the 1990s and attending on and off in the years to follow. However, she has since returned and is thankful she did. Millar participates in the Y’s Healthy Hips and Knees program twice a week and also enjoys the Y’s stretching program for 55 plus. Millar reports to her physiotherapist on the exercises that she’s done so that she can stay on track with her rehabilitation plan, and she continues to work with Y staff to prevent further falls. Miller has even met a friend in her program whom she meets for coffee outside of the Y.

The YMCA’s health assessment will take place at the Kelowna Family Y on Wednesday, November 23, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Each assessment is 1 hour in length and includes testing of cardiovascular endurance, balance, flexibility, blood pressure, strength, agility, and more.

Registration is required and space is limited. To reserve your spot email membership@ymcasibc.ca or call 250-491-9622. Members can also drop by the Kelowna Family Y fitness desk. Learn more about the YMCA of Southern Interior BC at ymcasibc.ca.
